Prompt Like a Photographer: Natural Language for V8

Keyword Stacks Are a Legacy Habit

Older Midjourney habits rewarded comma salads: woman, cafe, sunlight, 8k, ultrarealistic, masterpiece, best quality. On V8.x—especially default V8.2—that pattern often produces plastic lighting and confused priorities. The model already understands scenes; it needs photographer sentences, not SEO spam.

This is not a beginner anatomy lesson (see prompt fundamentals for structure basics). It is a lab method: write two prompts, change one philosophy, keep the parameters identical, and pick a winner with criteria—not vibes.

Sentence lab rules

FormSubject → place → light → medium
Ban list8k / masterpiece / best quality
ControlSame --ar --s --raw --v
IterateOne clause change per reroll

The Photographer Sentence Template

Use four clauses, in order:

  1. Subject — who/what + decisive action or pose
  2. Place — concrete environment, not “beautiful background”
  3. Light / mood — source + quality + time
  4. Medium — photograph, oil study, editorial still, etc.

Template:

[Subject] in [place], [light/mood], [medium] --ar … --s … [--raw] --v 8.2

Filled example:

A barista pours latte art at a narrow marble counter in a quiet morning cafe, late sunlight cutting a sharp diagonal across steam and ceramic, handheld documentary photograph --ar 4:5 --s 120 --raw --v 8.2

A/B Protocol (Do This Every Time You “Feel Stuck”)

Pair A — keyword dump (control)

barista, latte art, cafe, marble counter, sunlight, steam, ceramic cup, documentary, photorealistic, 8k, ultrarealistic, masterpiece --ar 4:5 --s 120 --raw --v 8.2

Pair B — photographer sentence (challenger)

A barista pours latte art at a narrow marble counter in a quiet morning cafe, late sunlight cutting a sharp diagonal across steam and ceramic, handheld documentary photograph --ar 4:5 --s 120 --raw --v 8.2

Hard rules:

  • Same aspect ratio, stylize, raw flag, and version.
  • Same seed only if you are stress-testing wording; otherwise allow normal variation but run each pair twice.
  • Score with a checklist, not “which is prettier.”
Criterion What to mark
Spatial logic Do counter, hands, and cup share one coherent space?
Light causality Does the described light source explain highlights/shadows?
Priority Is the pour the hero, or did fluff tags steal focus?
Texture honesty Ceramic/skin/steam look material-true, not plastic-smooth?

In most V8.2 tests, Pair B wins on spatial logic and light causality. Keep Pair A only when you intentionally want collage-like keyword chaos.

Rewrite Drill: Five Dumps → Five Sentences

Use these as warm-ups inside MidassAI Studio. Rewrite each dump before generating.

  1. Dump: forest, fog, deer, cinematic, volumetric, 8k
Sentence: A lone deer stands on a fog-soft forest path at dawn, pale volumetric light filtering through pine trunks, quiet nature photograph

  2. Dump: sneaker, product shot, white background, studio, sharp
Sentence: A white leather runner sneaker centered on a pure seamless cyclorama, softbox key from camera-left with gentle fill, catalog product photograph

  3. Dump: samurai, rain, neon, cyberpunk, epic
Sentence: A solitary samurai in a rain-soaked alley lit by broken neon kanji signs, reflections pooling at his feet, neo-noir still frame

  4. Dump: living room, scandinavian, plant, cozy, interior design
Sentence: A sunlit Scandinavian living room with a low oak sofa and a single monstera by the window, soft afternoon bounce light, architectural interior photograph

  5. Dump: perfume bottle, luxury, dark, gold, bokeh
Sentence: A faceted glass perfume bottle catching a thin gold rim light against a deep charcoal void, specular highlights controlled, luxury still-life photograph

Generate each pair with identical parameters. Archive winners in a sentence-winners preset pack.

Parameters Still Matter—Just Fewer of Them

Natural language does not replace parameter discipline. It reduces the need for decorative tokens.

Keep a short end-rack:

  • --ar always (composition depends on it)
  • --raw for literal products and documentary frames
  • --s low for fidelity, mid for art direction
  • --chaos only when you want compositional disagreement on purpose
  • Explicit --v 8.2 when comparing against older pinned jobs

Skip the trophy words: masterpiece, best quality, ultra detailed, trending. They rarely add information V8.2 lacks, and they often flatten priority.

When Keywords Still Help

Use compact keyword clusters inside a sentence for materials or lens names—not as a replacement for grammar:

Good: brushed stainless steel thermos with a matte silicone sleeve
Good: shot on a 35mm documentary lens look
Bad: thermos, steel, silicone, 35mm, bokeh, 8k, award winning

Multi-prompt weights (::) remain valid for hard conflicts (subject vs background). Try sentences first; add weights only when a clause is consistently ignored.

Studio Lab Setup

  1. Create two presets: lab-keyword-control and lab-sentence-challenger sharing the same parameter rack.
  2. For each brief, paste dump vs sentence.
  3. Score with the four criteria table.
  4. Promote only sentence winners into campaign folders.
  5. Revisit losers monthly—model defaults shift; some dumps may briefly regain edge after a version bump.
