Conversational Draft Mode: Iterate Prompts by Talking

Talk to Iterate—Don’t Rewrite From Scratch
Typing a perfect prompt on the first try is a myth. Conversational Mode (text or voice) exists so you can steer a Draft session the way you brief a junior photographer: “warmer,” “wider,” “less clutter,” “make the hero smaller in frame.”
This tutorial is not another Draft cost explainer. For batch size and Vary mechanics, use the Draft Mode workflow. Here we focus on conversation turns that keep ideation fast without destroying the brief.
Conversational Draft loop
Step 1 — Open Draft, State a Loose Brief
Enable Draft Mode on the Create page. Give Conversational Mode a director’s sentence, not a parameter dump:
“Wide shot of a rainy Tokyo alley at night, neon reflections on wet asphalt, lonely figure with an umbrella, moody but readable.”
Let the first Draft grid land. Your job is to notice what is wrong, not to decorate the prompt with twenty adjectives yet.
Step 2 — Speak (or Type) Single-Axis Corrections
Each conversational turn should change one axis:
| Turn | Good instruction | Bad instruction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | “Push the camera farther back—more alley depth.” | “More cinematic, epic, masterpiece, better composition.” |
| 2 | “Shift neon toward teal and magenta only.” | “Change neon, add rain, swap the person, make it cyberpunk.” |
| 3 | “Reduce crowd clutter; keep a single figure.” | “Fix everything that feels off.” |
Voice works well when you think out loud. Stay concrete: directions, colors, counts, distances. Midjourney’s conversational helper rewrites prompt text for you—read the rewritten prompt before you accept another turn.
Step 3 — Capture the Prompt Midjourney Actually Ran
After two or three useful turns:
- Copy the final expanded prompt from the job details.
- Paste it into a Studio note labeled
conversation-lock. - Strip accidental fluff the helper added (“ultra detailed,” “8k”) if it fights your brand look.
- Re-append the parameters you care about explicitly (
--ar,--raw,--s, version).
Conversation is a drafting partner. Your locked string is the production source of truth.
Step 4 — Exit Chat Noise Before You Spend HD
Do not keep chatting while promoting finals. Pattern that saves budget:
- Conversational Draft until the composition story is right.
- Stop the conversation.
- Run the locked prompt once more as a clean Draft or standard job.
- Vary only 1–2 tiles to SD/HD.
If you keep talking during upscales, you risk silent prompt drift between “the frame you liked” and “the frame you paid for.”
Step 5 — A 6-Turn Field Script You Can Reuse
Use this script for almost any scene brief:
- Establish: subject + place + time of day.
- Framing: wider / tighter / higher / lower.
- Light: key direction + quality (soft window vs hard street lamp).
- Palette: two named colors max.
- Clutter: what to remove with words or
--no. - Lock: “Freeze this prompt; no more creative additions.”
Example locked output after the script:
wide rainy Tokyo alley at night, single figure with clear umbrella, teal and magenta neon reflecting on wet asphalt, camera set further back for deep perspective, soft haze, readable silhouette --ar 16:9 --s 200 --v 8.2Voice-Specific Tips
- Pause between instructions; do not stack five changes in one breath.
- Spell rare proper nouns after the first miss (“the brand is MidassAI—M-I-D-A-S-S-A-I”).
- If voice mishears a material (“satin” → “Satan”), fix it in text immediately—do not hope the next turn repairs it.
- Keep sessions short. Long voice threads accumulate contradictory adjectives.
When Conversational Mode Is the Wrong Tool
- You already have a client-approved prompt string—paste it; do not renegotiate by chat.
- You need pixel-identical product geometry—use references, not vibes.
- You are harvesting
--srefcodes—use a dedicated random SREF hunt instead of chatting style adjectives.
Studio Habit
In MidassAI Studio, store two artifacts per ideation session:
conversation-transcript— rough turns for teammates.production-prompt— cleaned string with parameters.
Only the second artifact should enter batch jobs and client folders.
Try Midjourney in MidassAI Studio to practice Conversational Draft turns, then lock production prompts for clean HD finishes.
