Midjourney Draft Mode: Explore 24 Options Before You Spend…

What Draft Mode Is For
Draft Mode is Midjourney’s cheap exploration lane. On V8.1 and V8.2 (web Create page), one draft job returns a large grid—24 images at 512×512—for about 0.4 Fast minutes, roughly half the cost of a normal SD job while giving you far more visual breadth.
Use it when you are still deciding composition, wardrobe, prop layout, or style family. Do not use it as the final delivery format. The product path is always: Draft → pick → Vary (full SD/HD) → polish.
Draft Mode cheat sheet
How to Turn It On
On midjourney.com Create:
- Click the Draft Mode control next to the Imagine bar (lightning-style toggle in the menubar).
- Or append
--draftto a single prompt so only that job runs as draft. - Confirm your version: Draft on the V8 family expects V8.1 or V8.2. If your account default drifted, set it in Settings or add
--v 8.2.
Draft Mode is web-only today. Discord prompts will not give you the same 24-up draft path.
In MidassAI Studio, store draft-oriented presets with a clear name like explore-draft-v82 so operators know the output is not client-ready until Vary.
The Core Loop: Draft → Vary → Finish
Step 1 — Write for exploration, not perfection
Keep subjects clear, but allow breadth:
bookstore cafe corner table, rainy window, laptop open, soft tungsten practicals,
candid lifestyle photo --ar 3:2 --draft --v 8.2Avoid stuffing ten style adjectives on the first draft. You want diversity, not one over-constrained look.
Step 2 — Scan the 24 for structure
Score candidates on:
- Silhouette readability at thumbnail size
- Lighting direction (usable vs muddy)
- Prop honesty (no broken hands/objects if that matters later)
- Crop friendliness for your target
--ar
Ignore fine texture—Draft intentionally under-resolves detail.
Step 3 — Promote keepers with Vary
Click Vary on a draft tile. Midjourney regenerates that direction at your current SD or HD setting and charges the normal GPU cost for that tier. Think of Vary here as “promote to production resolution,” not classic subtle remix alone.
Step 4 — Optional polish
Once you have a full-res grid, use Remix, Editor, Upscale Subtle/Creative, or a second prompt pass with --style raw for product truthfulness.
Advanced: Style Hunting with Random Styles
Midjourney also shipped random styles in draft. Pair draft exploration with random style sampling when you are hunting a look book, then lift working --sref codes from favorites for controlled follow-ups. Save those codes in MidassAI Studio’s notes so the team can replay the winning look without re-rolling chaos.
Example hunt prompt:
desert highway motel at dusk, neon vacancy sign, cinematic wide shot
--ar 21:9 --draft --v 8.2After Vary, lock the look:
same motel scene, tighter three-quarter view, matching neon color grade
--ar 16:9 --sref <winning-code> --stylize 400 --v 8.2When Draft Mode Is the Wrong Tool
Skip Draft when:
- Legal/brand already approved a single locked frame (go straight SD/HD).
- You need byte-stable seeds for scientific comparison (draft diversity fights that goal).
- You are only upscaling an already-good SD grid (use HD/rerun tools instead).
Studio Operating Tips
- Label exports:
draft_,vary_sd_,final_hd_. - Cap draft rounds per brief (e.g. two draft prompts, then commit) so exploration does not eat the day.
- Teach writers that Draft success is selection, not prompt poetry.
- Route finals through MidassAI Studio Midjourney so locale CTAs and brand presets stay consistent.
Closing
Draft Mode turns Fast time into a search budget: twenty-four cheap looks, then pay full price only for winners. Master the Draft → Vary habit and your Midjourney hours stretch further without lowering the quality of published frames.
Practice the loop with saved presets in MidassAI Studio Midjourney.
