What This Tutorial Is (and Is Not)

This is a studio lighting and fidelity guide for product frames in Midjourney. It does not cover conversion rates, banner CRO, or storefront layout—that belongs in our ecommerce conversion guide.

Here you will learn a repeatable prompt formula: material language, light positions, camera angles, --raw, stylize ranges, and when to attach a real product photo as a reference.

Compliance First

Marketplace main images usually must show the item that ships. Midjourney is excellent for:

Concept lighting tests
Lifestyle scenes around a product
Background plates you will composite later

If the listing needs exact bottle geometry or printed label text, attach a clean product photo and use reference controls—or composite your real cut-out onto a generated set. Do not invent packaging claims the physical SKU cannot match.

The Five-Part Prompt Skeleton

Write prompts like a photography brief, not a mood poem:

[material + exact form] on [surface], [background], [lighting rig], [camera/angle], [DOF note] --ar … --raw --s … --v 8.2

1. Material + form

Bad: a nice bottle
Good: matte black 30ml glass dropper bottle with frosted shoulder and clear pipette tip

Front-load nouns Midjourney can lock: finish, volume cue, lid type, silhouette.

2. Surface + background

Be ruthless about white:

pure white seamless cyclorama, zero floor texture, soft contact shadow only

Lifestyle example:

honed beige limestone slab, shallow pool of water, eucalyptus stem out of focus behind

3. Lighting rig language

Name modifier, position, and quality:

Goal	Lighting phrase
Clean catalog	`large softbox key at 45° camera-left, white foam fill camera-right`
Luxury glass	`narrow strip light grazing the highlight edge, black card flag on fill side`
Translucent liquid	`backlight through the bottle core, soft frontal fill to keep label plane readable`

Avoid vague “studio lighting” or “professional light.”

4. Camera + angle

Pick one and stick to it across a SKU set:

straight-on elevation, lens centered on label plane
30° above horizontal three-quarter view
top-down flat lay, camera parallel to table

Add lens intent when useful: 85mm equivalent, f/8 for edge-to-edge sharpness or 100mm macro, f/2.8 for hero blur.

5. Parameters that keep shots literal

--raw — strips Midjourney’s painterly house look; mandatory for catalog realism.
--s 50–150 — low stylize for brand-faithful products; raise only for art-directed heroes.
--ar 1:1 — marketplace grids; --ar 4:5 — mobile PDPs and editorial crops.
--no text, watermark, logo, barcode — then add real typography in post if needed.

When to Attach a Real Product Photo

Use an image prompt or Omni Reference when:

Cap geometry must match the SKU.
Unusual silhouettes keep morphing.
You need the same bottle across ten scene swaps.

Workflow:

Shoot or export a clean cut-out on neutral background.
Attach it as the identity anchor.
Let the text prompt drive set, light, and camera only.
Raise reference weight until shape stabilizes, then stop—over-weighting freezes lighting too.

Change one axis per reroll:

Log the winner. Product sets die when every frame invents a new light logic.
