Edit Images in Midjourney V8: Instruct, Inpaint, Expand

What This Tutorial Covers

This is a hands-on Edit Model workflow for Midjourney’s V8.2 edit stack: instruct an existing image, inpaint a region, then expand the canvas. It is not another “what is Vary Region” primer—for the older regional loop, start with inpainting & outpainting. For the product announcement framing, read Edit Model what’s new.

Edit drill order

1Lock a clean hero base
2One-variable instruction edit
3Inpaint the defect only
4Outpaint for crop/ratio

Step 0 — Prepare a Worthy Base

Edit amplifies whatever you feed it.

Good bases:

  • Sharp subject, readable silhouette
  • Honest lighting (not crushed blacks)
  • Minimal text/logo you still need to replace later

Bad bases:

  • Draft tiles you never promoted
  • Heavy --chaos compositions with five competing subjects
  • Frames already full of melted hands or warped type

Save the base URL or Studio asset ID before you start. Every later compare needs that anchor.

Step 1 — Instruction Edit (Change One Thing)

Open Edit (lightbox Edit, Edit tab upload, or attach-to-prompt). Write an instruction that changes one axis:

Goal Instruction pattern
Wardrobe Keep the same person and pose. Change only the jacket to matte black leather with a visible zipper.
Environment Keep the subject identical. Replace the background with a soft gray seamless cyclorama and matching contact shadow.
Time of day Preserve composition and wardrobe. Shift lighting to late golden hour from camera-left.

Avoid stacking five adjectives. If the model drifts identity, shorten the instruction and restate “same face / same product silhouette.”

Re-run twice with identical wording before you rewrite—Edit still has seed variance.

Step 2 — Inpaint Only the Broken Region

When one area fails (hand, bottle label plane, reflection):

  1. Select the smallest region that contains the defect.
  2. Instruct what should appear inside that mask, not a full-scene rewrite.
  3. Keep global lighting language consistent with the base (“softbox key camera-left”).

Example:

Inside the selected region only: replace the right hand with a natural grip on the cup handle, matching skin tone and warm key light from the left. Do not change the face or background.

If inpaint keeps inventing a second subject, shrink the mask and remove style adjectives.

Step 3 — Outpaint / Expand for a New Crop

Use expand when marketing needs a wider ratio or more negative space—not when the subject itself is wrong.

Workflow:

  1. Decide the target use (16:9 hero, 4:5 social, 1:1 grid).
  2. Expand edges with a short scene continuation (“continue the same gray seamless studio, no new props”).
  3. Check contact shadows and horizon lines after expand—outpaint loves to invent shelves and windows.

If expand ruins product geometry, regenerate the hero at the correct --ar instead of forcing a square into widescreen.

Step 4 — Taste Tools Without Mud

Personalization (--p), Moodboards, and --sref are supported. Midjourney notes they may need extra prompt direction in Edit. Pattern that works in Studio tests:

  • Apply at most one taste source per edit pass.
  • Add one concrete material or light clause.
  • Compare with taste off if the edit looks “pretty but wrong.”

When to Abandon Edit and Return to Imagine

Stop editing and start a fresh Imagine job when:

  • You need a different camera angle more than a wardrobe swap.
  • Identity has already drifted across three failed instructs.
  • You need strict object lock that your team still pins on V7 Omni workflows.

Document the decision in the project note so teammates do not keep hammering a dead edit chain.

Studio Checklist

  1. Preset edit-base-lock — stores hero URL + approved seed notes.
  2. Preset edit-instruct-one-var — template sentence for single-axis changes.
  3. Preset edit-inpaint-local — mask instruction boilerplate.
  4. Export finals only after a side-by-side with the untouched base.
