Midjourney Tile: Check a Seamless Pattern

A Midjourney image can look convincing on its own and still fail as a repeating pattern. Before using --tile output for wrapping paper, packaging or a web background, inspect several copies joined together. You need to check both the edges and the rhythm of the full repeat.

Midjourney's September 24, 2026 announcement says tiling improved for V8.1 and V8.2. This October tutorial explains a suggested quality check after that update. It does not present a measured before-and-after test or guarantee that every generated texture will pass. We checked the official announcement on October 8.

Begin with a pattern brief rather than a scene

Choose a subject that can repeat without relying on a single centre of attention. Small olive leaves on a quiet paper background are a useful learning example. A dramatic central tree or large isolated portrait creates a much more obvious repeated block, even if its edges connect correctly.

State the intended use before generating. A subtle web background needs low visual contrast behind text. Wrapping paper can tolerate a more visible rhythm. A fabric print introduces scale and production questions that an on-screen preview cannot settle. These uses should not share the same approval rule simply because all of them need repetition.

Try this original prompt as a starting point:

Small hand-painted olive leaves on warm ivory paper,
evenly spaced motifs, restrained green palette,
flat illustration, gentle variation in leaf direction --tile

Treat it as a controlled exercise. It requests a visual direction, not a verified production-ready surface. Record the model and settings you select so you can compare a revision without forgetting how the first candidate was made.

Build a 3×3 repeat from the exported image

Export the candidate and note its exact width and height in pixels. In a raster editor, create a canvas three times those dimensions in each direction. Place nine identical copies at whole-pixel positions, with no gap and no overlap. Do not stretch individual copies to make them fit.

For a tile of width W and height H, place copies at horizontal positions 0, W and 2W, and vertical positions 0, H and 2H. The final canvas is 3W by 3H. This is a layout method, not a claim about any particular Midjourney export resolution.

Turn off automatic spacing or snapping that inserts a border. A one-pixel gap created by your layout tool can look like a model seam. Conversely, overlapping or feathering copies can hide a real discontinuity. The first inspection should show the exported pixels without a repair layer.

Inspect horizontal edges, vertical edges and corners

View the repeat at 100 percent first. Follow one horizontal boundary and then one vertical boundary. Look for abrupt changes in colour, brightness or line direction. A leaf that crosses an edge should continue convincingly on the adjacent copy, rather than ending as an unexplained cut.

Next inspect the points where four tiles meet. A corner can reveal a defect that is less obvious along a straight edge. Watch for a small cross, a sudden patch of empty background or a motif that appears twice in an awkward cluster. Check all four corner relationships rather than approving only the most attractive area.

Use a temporary guide to locate the boundaries, then hide it. A visible guide can make any edge look suspicious, while a hidden boundary encourages you to judge what a viewer would actually see. Record the location of a real defect so that a later revision can target the right problem.

Judge rhythm from a distance

Zoom out after the edge inspection. Even a technically continuous pattern can form obvious rows, large dark islands or repeated holes. This is a distribution problem rather than a seam problem. Blurring an edge will not solve a distracting centre that appears nine times.

Ask whether the eye notices the individual motif or the repeated square. A few larger leaves may become a strong diagonal stripe across the whole sheet. A pale patch near the centre may become a regular grid of empty spaces. If either effect conflicts with the brief, revise motif scale, density or contrast.

For the olive-leaf exercise, compare a sparse version with a moderately dense version while keeping the palette stable. Do not change density, colour, drawing style and background texture together. A focused revision makes it easier to explain why one candidate fits the intended use better.

Match the repair to the defect

If you see a thin straight line, first check placement and export borders. Confirm that the copies meet at exact pixel coordinates. If the line remains, examine whether the tile's opposite edges differ in brightness or content. Regenerating may be more efficient than repairing many inconsistent edge details.

If the edges meet but the repeat feels mechanical, change the distribution. Request smaller motifs, more varied direction or a quieter background, then repeat the same inspection. A pattern can be seamless yet visually tiring. The two judgments should remain separate in your notes.

For local retouching, use an editor that lets you inspect the repeat after the change. A repair on one boundary must remain consistent with the opposite boundary. Do not approve the isolated tile after retouching and assume its neighbours will still match. Rebuild the full repeat from the repaired export.

Recheck the actual delivery file

Resize, compression and colour conversion can change the final appearance. Repeat the inspection using the file you intend to deliver, at its intended scale. For a web background, test it behind representative text and on the actual page. For print, request an appropriate production proof rather than relying on a bright monitor.

Keep logos, exact lettering and legal packaging information in a deterministic layout layer. A generated decorative pattern is not a reliable way to create precise product claims. Also confirm that your source references and use of the output fit the applicable service terms and project permissions.

Save the original tile, the final export and a contact sheet of the 3×3 repeat. Add notes about model, prompt, dimensions and any repair. That small package lets another designer review the decision without rebuilding your entire process.

The acceptance condition is concrete: the delivered file joins cleanly, has a suitable rhythm and works at its intended scale. If one of those checks fails, keep revising rather than relying on the word “seamless” in a prompt. The prompt fundamentals guide can help simplify a crowded description before the next attempt.
